Slechte PMI cijfers hebben weinig invloed

De markt consolideerd nu rond de weerstandsniveaus, vandaag (1 april) en morgen (2 april) kan de markt met een grote beweging komen. Technisch ziet het er naar uit dat dit omlaag wordt, maar een verassing zit er ook nog in. Veel hangt af van de dollarkoers.


Vandaag 1 april 2004:

  • Om 13:45 komt de Europeese bank met de beslissing over de rentetarieven. Men verwacht een onveranderde rentestand maar een verassing wordt niet uitgesloten.
  • De Weekly initial claims, de PPI over februari, Construction Spending over februari, de Auto verkopen over maart en de ISM over de maand maart. Enkele FED gouverneurs praten vandaag over de economie.

  • 17:58 ET Wednesday After Hours : prices levels vs. 4 pm ET: The after hours trade has seen a slightly positive bias develop as investors have taken heart in a few better than expected earnings announcements. Presently, the S&P futures, at 1127, are 2 points above fair value, and the Nasdaq 100 futures, at 1443, are also 2 points above fair value.
  • American Eagle (AEOS) +6% : Teen retailer guides Q1 (Apr) EPS to $0.25-0.30 versus $0.09 last year and the $0.16 Reuters Research consensus estimate; Cites a March same store sales gain of 7.8%; Briefing.com cited AEOS as a January Effect candidate in early November, and the stock has appreciated over 80% since
  • Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) -1% : Home goods retailer posts a 37% increase in Q4 (Feb) profits and a 24% rise in revenues - both of which were ahead of Street expectations; Stock has spiked 12% in the past couple of weeks in anticipation of the report, and traders have booked profits from the good news.
  • ChevronTexaco (CVX) +1% : Integrated oil & gas company announces a new program to repurchase up to $5 bln in stock over the next 3 years; Management credits a 'sustained period of strong cash flow;' Stock got a slight boost today from OPEC's decision to cut quotas, which should help keep earnings growth intact
  • SuperGen (SUPG) -27% : Pharmaceutical company reports the results of its Dacogen Phase III trial; Says patients that took the drug progressed more slowly to leukemia or death than patients who did not receive the treatment; SuperGen stipulated that 'adverse events' were seen in the treatment group; Company still plans to submit a New Drug Application based on the data; SUPG had run up 89% since early Mar
  • Manugistics (MANU) -16% : Provider of supply chain management software misses both the top and bottom-line consensus estimates in its Q4 (Feb) report; Stock has been hovering around its 200-day simple moving average, and this move has sent it decisively below that level; Competitors JDAS and RTEK are also down tonight.
  • 14:56 ET Hearing that large buy program at Goldman helping push the market higher, and drive Naz firmly through 2,000 area :

  • 13:08 ET Monster Worldwide finds bid as investors/traders position in stock amid talk that Friday's jobs data could come in strong (MNST) 25.99 +0.79:

  • 12:00 ET Treasuries higher on disappointing data : Treasuries made their way moderately higher following disappointing Chicago PMI numbers and weaker than expected factory orders data. Traders continue to position themselves for Friday's nonfarm number, which remains bullish despite today's limp showing in PMI's employment component. With no additional economic releases scheduled for today, the market should remain tame within a narrow range, and possibly grinding higher later in the session. The market continued to bang into 3.85% and fell off going into the EuroZone close. Overall, volume has remained fairly decent. A first look at the long-delayed February ISM, could spark some action but the focus remains heavily on Friday. The 10-year is currently +08/32nds; yielding 3.860%, 2-year is currently +01/32nds; yielding 1.596%, 5-year is currently +06/32nds; yielding 2.808%, 30-year is currently +18/32nds; yielding 4.777%.

  • 09:55 ET FED SAYS WILL NOT COMMENT ON GREENSPAN RUMOR -- Reuters : Hearing that the rumor is of a mild heart attack.
  • 08:57 ET Gold Oil and Dollar Summary : Big action in the Yen (104.05) as it rockets more than 1.5% to a 4-year high (103.40) versus the Dollar after data showed signs of an improving Japanese economy along with recent speculation the BOJ is curbing its interference to keep its currency weak. Tomorrow's Tankan survey is expected to show Japanese business confidence improving as well. The Euro (1.2234) is trading at a one-week high against the Dollar ahead of Thursday's ECB meeting to discuss cutting rates.
